  12. Yes I know it sounds pretty unbelievable doesn't it, but it's true.Each day 
  13. RADIO AMATEURS the world over exchange all sorts of information between all
  14. sorts of computers without incurring a phone bill of any description.  How?
  15. you may ask, or you may not.  Well to start with, to call it a modem  isn't 
  16. strictly true.  What it  is  is  a  TERMINAL  NODE  CONTOLLER  (TNC)  which 
  17. controls a tranceiver ( a transmitting and receiving radio ).  The TNC also 
  18. organises all the protocols associated with these transmissions.Then a home 
  19. computer  can  be  used  to  display  all  of  the  incoming  and  outgoing 
  20. information or messages.  This system is known as PACKET  radio.  "PACKET", 
  21. as the name implies, means a transmission is split up into several  packets 
  22. of data which are sent one at a time.  This means a  complete  message  may 
  23. need several packets.  After each packet is  sent  the  receiving  computer 
  24. sends an acknowledgement.  Then  the  transmitting  computer sends the next 
  25. packet and so on.  Through  using  this  form of hand  shaking  means  that 
  26. information passed between these computers is virtually error free.

  28. The only down side to using the radio transmitters for packet radio is that
  29. you  need a licence, and to get a licence you have to take an exam.  But as 
  30. I said before there are radio amateurs the world over so if they  can  pass 
  31. an, exam why can't you?!
